Sa•ba•bah (säbə'bə), n. 1) Hebrew slang adopted from Arabic meaning cool, groovy, it’s all good. 2) Super groovy young adults group at B’nai Israel for folks in their 20’s and 30’s.
HELLO, MY NAME IS
First things first, we’ve got to reintroduce ourselves. The Young Adults of B’nai Israel has a new name. Why? Because we wanted something more original, something that says more precisely who we are. And because “Young Adults” sounded too much like a section of the library – you know, that revolving wire rack filled with teenage romance novels. So our group is now called Sababah: The 20-30-somethings of B’nai Israel.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR
OK, now that that’s out of the way... What is Sababah up to? We have been conducting a very scientific polling process to see what kinds of events you all want from your young Jewish community. After extensive statistical analysis, we determined that you want more drinking – er, socializing – and less religion.
We came to this conclusion because so many of you showed up for our first event last September – the happy hour at Brew It Up. Remember how fun that was? So we are making an effort to plan more mixer type events.
The next one will be on THURSDAY JULY 19 at 6:30 pm. Join us at the new “L” wine bar in Midtown – at 1801 L Street. We have reserved the back patio, perfect for a summer evening. Light appetizers will be provided. An extensive wine list is available at the cash bar. You will soon receive an Evite for this event so that you can RSVP. Speaking of which, some of you have requested that we publish our recipient list on those Evites. So yeah, we’re gonna give it a try.
GOD'S ON VACATION
We’re not dropping the spirituality part of this operation altogether, but our monthly Shabbat dinners are on hiatus for the summer. They will resume after the High Holy Days with a new format that emphasizes quality over quantity. Instead of holding Shabbat dinners every month, we will do them roughly every other month. This should make it easier for everyone to come and create more lively tables. It will also give us more time to plan for the purely social events. Amen.
WHO'S IN?
You do not have to be a member of Congregation B’nai Israel to attend our events. You are welcome even if you haven’t set foot in a temple since your bar mitzvah. Haven’t had a bar mitzvah? You are still down with us.
But if you are interested in joining the temple, you may want to ask about the new dues structure. The cost of membership has been drastically reduced for people age 22-33. You can now become a member for about what you would spend on a pair of tickets for the High Holy Days. Who doesn’t love a bargain?
IT'S ALL ABOUT YOU
Whether you care about joining a temple or not, all of you have expressed interest in connecting with other Jewish people in the under-40 age range. Now we need you (and you, and you) to make this effort thrive.
*Spread the word.
*Invite your friends.
*Show Sababah some love.
You can create a cool Jewish community just by being a part of it. |
